The heart of a servant, please, Lord, grant to me; A profitable servant, and not a selfish tyrant, let me be. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity doth edify; Let me live in your love, or I feel I surely will die. To live in your favor is life sublime; To daily work out your will is a glorious time. A day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere; Better to be a doorkeeper in your house than a ruler anywhere. Oh, to have a heart that beats to the tune of my Lord; A heart that is restrained by your Love’s strong cord. Though subject to vanity you fashioned me to be; If my soul pines for your favor, it is pleasing to thee. Please cause all my false and hypocritical ways to die, As I beseech your Holy Spirit my heart to try. May I patiently walk each day by faith in the path you have trod, As a servant, pressing toward the prize of the high-calling of God.
