Acknowledge His Name

God moves us a step at a time. Day by day, bit by bit, preparing us, equipping us, training us, often without our even realizing that what has just occurred will position us to be ready for the change that we are seeking and asking God for. We look for the large event, the resounding change, but God leads us in smaller increments because He is so much greater than we realize.

Psalms 90
v.4 For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night.

When we are responsible, in purely human terms, for a large group of individuals, whether as a teacher with a classroom of kids, or an officer over many soldiers, we have to direct the many separate people as one group and have a broad, general goal. It may be to get all the kids on a bus or perhaps to conquer a town. As the person responsible, our time is spent with just those who do not follow directions, because we are limited in what we can do. As a part of the group, on the other hand, we know what the immediate goal is, but we may be on our own to get there.

Psalms 90
v.12 Teach us to number our days aright that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

God, because He is NOT limited, can direct each of us individually in what He wants done. As a result, there can be a diversity of approaches, a multitude of separate directions, and it is only as we follow the Spirit's leading, that we eventually see what the immediate goal is, but in looking back it becomes evident how the hand of the Spirit had everything in control perfectly, step by step.

v.17 May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us

For some of us (okay, most of us!), it can be uncomfortable to not know more than a step or two ahead of time. That is why it is so important to have quiet time at the start of each day that is set aside to spend in the presence of the Spirit of God. There we may receive the next step, we may gain deeper understanding, but most importantly, we simply refresh our awareness that God IS, and He can be trusted no matter what the day brings.

v.14 Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.

Step by step, day by day, moment by quiet moment, our time in His presence and in His word builds up an unshakable faith. The house we build in our soul out of each of these rock-solid experiences where the Word becomes Life is a place we can furnish with the furniture of faith to be a sanctuary where we meet with God and give the sacrifice of praise.

Psalms 91
v.14 Because he loves me, says the Lord, I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
v.15 He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him
v.16 With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation.

Father, we turn to You at the start of this day and commit our time and energy and desire to You. Lead us, guide us, protect us, grow us. We are Yours, willingly and gratefully just as You are ours, joyfully and lovingly.
